A Little History

Only nine years after the Civil War and President Lincoln’s assassination, a little general store came into existence in a rural area of Monroe County,Ohio Parks’ General Store was built in 1874 by Jacob Krochett shortly after he married Elizabeth Knox. Parks General Store was run by Mary and Walter Parks for 50 years. After Walter’s death in 2000, Mary operated the store with the help of her children until 2007. This photo was taken in the late 1950’s and shows little has changed over five decades. On the back shelf is a row of library books. According to Julie Parks Jones, Eva Moffett, former Monroe County librarian, would bring library books to the store for the people of the area to check out and read. Shown, fromleft, are Walter Parks, Julie Parks, Henry Miller, Sr., Jim Miller, Bill Schneeberger, Jewett Thomas and Sheriff Homer (Pie) Antill. The sheriff was at the store while investigating the death of an elderly lady, who lived nearby.
